Check the tournament calendar
The Japan Sumo Association’s published calendar places Tokyo tournaments in January, May and September, with Osaka’s tournament in March. Exact opening dates, closing dates and ticket arrangements should be checked on the current official schedule. This calendar is useful when competition is the main reason for your visit. It is not a complete calendar of every sumo activity available to a traveller, nor does it confirm any private provider’s availability.
Ask about private training on your travel dates
For a private session, the relevant question is whether a venue and appropriate team can be arranged for your dates. The programme lasts approximately ninety minutes and can introduce visitors to sumo through explanation and guided participation. Availability outside professional tournament dates still needs confirmation. Equally, travelling during a tournament does not mean that a particular instructor or ring will be available. Keep preferred dates and one or two alternatives in your enquiry.

Plan your visit between tournaments
If learning about the sport matters more than seeing a particular competition, state that clearly. You can prepare with the Japan Sumo Association’s technique and cultural resources, then bring questions to a confirmed private session. Where you also want a museum visit or other cultural stop, check its own opening arrangements before adding it to the day. Request private training at least two weeks in advance when possible, and wait for the specific programme confirmation before treating the activity as fixed.
